Found movies

drive thru

For some reason I am now finding all kinds of movie trailers that I want to see.  I am wondering if I am doing this all because I need material to watch while waiting for a wort to finish cooking.

So I have found these B-List movies and are interested in watching them. Hopefully I can con some of my friends into watching them too.  Check out their trailers and let me know what you think.

Dead Snow 2

Dead Snow 2 – Red vs Dead

If you haven’t seen the first, you have missed out on a great zombie movie.  If you have seen the first, then this is just a great continuation of the first.  They really have expanded the original concept and now the Nazi zombies are on a mission of revenge.  They even drive Tiger tanks… what else could be so cool!  I will have to check it out when I get time. LOL.

jQuery NoConflict(bool)

I wrote the following several months ago and didn’t publish it, so now I will. I had the interview in December, but have been too lazy to publish.

So I just had an interview that didn’t go as well as I would have liked, but the silver lining to this is I learned something new.

As some of you know there is a library used by web programmers called jQuery. This library is a light weight javascript library made to help web developers deliver some top quality web sites and applications.  They allow you to manipulate a webpage with ease.  There are tons of great reasons to use this library.

You can download and get more documentation here on jQuery itself.

Now what I learned is very technical so forgive me if you are not.

If you use jquery, the way you reference it is with a $ symbol for its variable.  You can also reference the library by using jquery variable in your javascript.  There are times where another javascript library or code has already defined the $ variable for its code. Or even some have used the jquery variable for itself.  jQuery has the ability to use another variable instead of its default variable names.  jQuery.noConflict(bool) is the function you can call to change the variable names.

The way you would use this is

Movies I want to see in 2014

I get to see about 5 movies a year if I am lucky, but here is my list of “must see” movies for 2014.  Who knows, I might get to see a few.

Jupiter Ascending – Not sure about it, but it does look cool. I am worried that the best parts are in the trailer.

Transcendence – Looks to be a wild and thought provoking movie. And Johnny Depp.

Sabotage – ARNOLD!!!! Another showing from the former governator!

Godzilla – Again… Looks to be the same look as the last Godzilla. That makes me worried, the rest of it looks cool.

Captain America 2: Winter Soldier – Marvel films are getting better and better. Seems that they are just gaining more and more steam as they go down the current story line arc. I don’t know who devised this arc, but they are genius.

Edge of Tomorrow – Looks to be what Starship Troopers should have been. I know it is Tom Cruise, but it could be great Sci-fi. And at the least there will be tons of explosions. The flashback or time jump may suck though. It is rare that a movie that uses that technique ever really soar.

Zone 261 – Zombies. ‘Nuff said. Well, more like odd zombies, but still, ’nuff said.

The Mighty Eighth – Looks riveting, not sure if I have to see it on the big screen though. I had flashbacks to Heavy Metal bomber scenes, just no alien artifact on the bomber.

Interstellar – Feel good movie with rockets. I thought this movie should have been released 2 years ago.

Walking with the Enemy – Schindler’s List, but from the inside?

I, Frankenstein – I like the premise of this movie, just not sure if this is another Van Helsing.

The Last Days on Mars – Looks to be an Alien or Prometheus knockoff.

Monsters: Dark Continent – Didn’t think they would make a sequel, the first one was haunting and beautiful. This one looks to be similar.

X-Men: Days of Future Past – X-Men, time travel, and Wolverine. What more could you want?

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – Not sure, but more information on how we destroyed ourselves and Apes replaced us at the top of the food chain.

And just for fun:
A million ways to die in the west – Seth

Personal Branding

Your brand here

Your brand here

Today I had a conversation about Personal Branding. The reason for the conversation itself is irrelevant, but my reaction was. For that fraction of a second I was upset. Then I took stock and really thought about it and how it applies to my career, and even my life.  Then back at my desk I looked up some articles the person I was having a conversation with sent me, and started to realize a few things.

I have always had a problem with personal branding. To explain it, I have left my personal branding to be blank, and let other’s fill in that blank. The more I think about it, I realize that is like buying costly advertisement for the Super Bowl and just putting “Think what you want about us, but take us or leave us.” on the screen for 30 million dollars. Not a good idea if you are trying to sell something. And the more I reflect on my life, you are ALWAYS trying to sell something. Whether it is for someone to go out with you, or you are getting a job, or even getting people to go the restaurant you want to for lunch. It is all sales, convincing someone to buy you, or your ideas.

Realizing that the reason I am where I am, and not further along in life and in my career has to do with my branding and how I have marketed myself.  Don’t get me wrong, I am very happy with where I am and what I have accomplished, yet there are days I want more.  If I had to admit it, I knew why I am not where I wanted to be due to how I portray myself.

So, with all that, what does this have to do with you?  Well, I would suggest you take some time and evaluate your personal branding.  See what story you are telling people.

Out of respect for the person’s work who sent me these links, I did not include them.  I have found these links for your you.  Google and see what you can learn about how you can brand yourself.

Ender’s Game Trailer – Finally!

What do you get when you take a great story, and add Ben Kingsley, Harrison Ford?  Ender’s Game.  It has been a while in the making, so we will see if it lives up to my memory of the novels.

International Day Against DRM

Stop the Hollyweb! No DRM in HTML5.

You can find out more about this movement here :

I would suggest you check it out.  DRM doesn’t work.  Knowing the pirate mentality, I can tell you, what they have already done is enough.  You don’t need DRM.  It just makes the web even stickier than it already is.

Another reason the USPS will be gone in a few years

Burning Postal Truck

If you cannot tell, I am angry at the Post Office.  I needed to get a passport for my daughter.  Should be an easy thing, right? Simple even.  Yeah. No.

Logically you would think that if you want to get a passport from the US Post Office all you have to do is go to the website and type in your postal code and it will spit out your local Post Office where you can get setup an appointment.  You could even expect the phone number to work correctly too, right?  Yeah, right.

So you call the number for several times that day, so you call the 800 number the Post Office provides, and it confirms that the data and numbers you were given already are correct.  Continuing to call the number, you still get that busy signal.  Leaving work early you go to the Post Office and wait in line.  A long line. And then you are told that they have not handled passport applications for over year.  They are going to update the Post Office Website soon.  Don’t you think that when you stop taking passport applications you could do the update?  One year later and you are not up to date?  There was no way to find out the information you need unless you walk into the Post Office.  Why have all the resources if they are out of date?

I know it was not the fault of the people that worked at that Post Office, but this is ridiculous.  To top it all off I find out that the price of stamps has gone up to $.46.

How they can raise the cost in the face of the fact that they have been giving such bad customer service is beyond me.  For example, last year I had a failed attempt at selling on eBay.  I went into the Post Office and wanted one of their “If it fits, it ships” boxes to keep costs low.  They don’t have any of them and they point me to the rack (which is almost bare) and tell me that is the best they have.  There was absolutely no attempt at helping me.  It put me off at the time, and becomes one more thing that makes me apathetic about the plight of the US Postal Worker.  They complain about their jobs and their benefits, cry me a river.  If they were to run like a real business instead of like a crappy bureaucracy they might get more love from us.

As far as I am concerned they are a failing business and need to really rethink how they are going to work if they want to survive.  I am not sure they can survive since they have to change and so does most of our Legislative branch.

I will pay my $.46 per letter ten times per year and see how this all falls apart.

Did you know babies are a lot of work?

Baby girl

Ok, so many of you already know I have had a baby girl (and no that is not a picture of her), and I am still amazed at how much work they really are.  That about sums up the last couple of months for me.  It also lamely explains why the blog has been dead.  My time and energy to be able to read and write have been limited to say the least.

Now that my daughter is for the most part sleeping thru the night and her bed time is early enough that I have time to do things in the evening.  I have to say I thought I was ready for her arrival. I was ready for her to get here, just not to be here everyday.  There is a great big difference between being tired and being tired from taking care of a baby.  Friends had told me there was a difference, but until I experienced it I didn’t understand it.

Anyways, what that means is I get time to write more.  YAY!
